Julian Assange Calls Palin & Huckabee "Terrorists" for Inciting Extra-Judicial Kidnapping & Murder

In a startling interview with Cenk Uyger on MSNBC, who standing in for Dylan Ratigan, Jullian Assange unloaded with both barrel's against all his critics in a tour-de-force defense of the First Amendment and the Rule of Law - correctly pointing out that those who have called for his Extra Judicial Assasination and Kidnapping are advocating the "Very Definiton of Terrorism" by supporting the use of illegal violence to achieve poliical gains.

I think Assange makes a ton of good points. First that it's a false issue to question whether Wikileaks is or isn't a journalistic endeaver, particularly when many of the releases where implement in complete co-ordination with and vetted by the New York Times and the Guardian.

Let's remember that it wasn't that long ago when the Right Wing and Bush Administration called for similar New York Times Editor Bill Keller a "Traitor" when his paper revealed that Americans were being illegally wiretapped?

ill Keller, the executive editor of the New York Times, sat on a couch in the Oval Office of the White House, three feet from President George W. Bush, and listened.

For a meeting without historical precedent, the president of the United States had called the Times to the White House to personally try to prevent a state secret from appearing in print—an exposé of the National Security Agency’s efforts to monitor phone calls without court-approved warrants that the Times had held back on for over a year. Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. sat in a wing chair facing Bush, while Keller and Washington bureau chief Philip Taubman sat across from Bush’s lawyer, Harriet Miers, and national-security adviser Stephen Hadley. General Michael Hayden, the then-director of the National Security Agency, sat alongside Bush with a thick briefing book in his lap.

After stiff pleasantries, Bush issued an emphatic warning: If they revealed the secret program to the public and there was another terrorist attack on American soil, the Paper of Record would be implicated. “The basic message,” recalls Keller, “was, ‘You’ll have blood on your hands.’ ”

Here's a typical example of what the Right-WingNut-o-sphere had to say about it at the time.

Once again treason is in the air as the fifth estate (or should that be fifth column?) led by the Treason Times under the tutelage of the worm-like ‘Pinch’ Sulzberger and the terrorists’ fellow-travelling Bill Keller do what they can to aid and abet America’s barbaric enemies in their endeavours to murder as many US citizens as possible, particularly if they are troops.

The fact that what the Bush Adminstration was doing was a clear crime in violation of the FISA Act never seem to occur to these people.

Assange:

All members of the Press, and the good American people who believe in Freedom, and the good foundation principles of the Revolutionary Founders have to pull together to resist the attack on the First Amendment

Just as Keller was attacked then, Assange is being attacked now. It is interesting to note - as Assange openly admits - the technology of Wikileaks is one where they don't even know who their sources are as files can be uploaded to their servers by Whistle-blowers annonymously which does present a problem of accuracy and Vetting. This is a subject that was brought up by Rachel Maddow while discussing Wikileaks with Michael Moore last night.

Rachel makes an excellent point that the one element that hasn't been seriously considered is that Wikileaks may be an excellent tool for spreading Disinformation, just a Scooter Libby was able use Judith Miller to spread WMD Disinformation about Iraq and attempt to reveal the ID of a Covert U.S. Operative through the pages of the New York Times - yet we hardly ever hear the Right Wing complaining about those Traitorous Illegal Leaks now do we?

People who argue that Richard Armitage was the first source for Robert Novak ignore the fact that Armitage only discovered that information because of Libby and the fact is that Libby gave Classified informatoin WMD and Plame to Judith Miller a month previously. The only reason Miller didn't scoop Novak is the fact that the Timees spiked her story. Legally, Libby was the first source of the leak, regardless of who was the first to publish. IMO both he and Cheney (who told Libby about Valerie Wilson connection to the CIA in the first place) should be in the military brig right now under solitary confinement right next to Bradley Manning - for Treason.

They only escaped because Libby commited perjury and obstruction of justice to save Cheney.

Assange responding the Joe Biden calling him a "High Tech Terrorist".

Assange: Let's look at the definition of terrorism. The definition of Terrorism is a group that uses violence of the threat of violence for political ends. Now, no one in our four years of publishing covering over 120 countries has ever been physically harmed. And that's not just us saying that, that's The Pentagon Saying That. That's NATO and Kabul saying that. No one, not a shred of evidence.

Beleive me, if they could find or even easily manufacture evidence of this they would be doing that immediately. So it's clear whoever the terrorist are here - it's not us.

But, we see constant threats from people - Republicans in the Senate trying to make a name for themselves, Sarah Palin, to Shock Jocks on Fox and unfortunately also members of the Democratic Party - calling for my Assasination. Calling for the illegal kidnapping of my staff.

Just a few days ago on Fox, that was the phrase used. "Illegal." "He should be illegally murdered, if neccesary. Assasinated by the law if possible. If a not, lllegally."

What kind of message does that say about the rule of law in the United States? That is conducting violence in order to accomplish a political end. The elimination of this organization,or the threat of political violence to eliminate a publisher. And that is the Definition of Terrorism.

Cenk: How do you respond to Mike Huckabee - "Anything less than execution is too kind for you". Or Sarah Palin who says "We should persue him as we would al Qeada"?

Assange: (He's) Just another idiot trying to make a name for himself (and herself). If we are to have a civil society, you can not have senior people on making calls on national television to go around the judiciary and illegally murder people. That is an incitement to Commit Murder, that is an Offense. That is not a Country that obeys the rule of law. Does the United States obey the rule of law, because Europeans are beginning to wonder...

When people call for the illegal murder, deliberate assasination and kidnapping of others they should be charged for incitement to commit Murder.

In all honestly, regardless of whatever his own current legal problems are in the sexual misconduct case, he makes a serious point. if some hyped up wingnut does make at attempt on Assange's life, or attacks is staff - which would be a bit difficult considering the fact they are in Europe - would not that put people like Huckabee and Palin far beyond the bright Brandenburg Line for incitement of violence?

If they're going to carelessly toss the "T-Word" at him for simply sharing information, he has every right to toss it back with double-strength based on their own words - especially when it fits.

He also goes on the make the point that it's like that Bradley Manning may be being held in long-term solitary confinement largely to get him to flip and give up information against Assange for inticing him to commit treason.

If that's true - that horrifying. That's coercian, and further - as Assange points out - they Don't Solicit Classified Information, the point of his site is that much like Wikipedia, the information is provided voluntarily by the public, not solicited by their members.

But then again, anyone could theoritically put up a website with illegally gather classified information could they - only they would fail to have what Wikileaks provides, a bulwark of annonymity and confidentiality and a connection to various mainline journalists such as the Times who can provide vetting and validation of the information.

Even Wikipedia doesn't provide that.

The Other Stupid Thing Alan Simpson Said..

Besides his "Greediest Generation" line, he also said this...

"You don't want to listen to the right and the left -- the extremes," he said. "You don't want to listen to Keith Olbermann and Rush Babe [Limbaugh] and Rachel Minnow [sic] or whatever that is, and Glenn Beck. They're entertainers. They couldn't govern their way out of a paper sack -- from the right or the left. But they get paid a lot of money from you and advertisers -- thirty, fifty million a year -- to work you over and get you juiced up with emotion, fear, guilt, and racism. Emotion, fear, guilt, and racism.

Frankly, that's a lot of Horse Hooey!

In no way, shape, form, or fever dream delusion are Rachel or Keith equal to Rush and Beck. As stupid as the "Greediest Generation" line was - this was even dead doornail dumber.

For starters Keith and Rachel don't LIE!

This IS the Change we Hoped For...

In the last week or so the World has almost literally shifted upside down...

In Afghanistan, Hamid Karzi has agreed to a Run-Off Election, which will significant help legitimize the government after the UN report of ballot stuffing in the election.

In Iran, a deal has been agreed to that will significantly control and slow down that countries Nuclear ambitions.

Corporate Fat Cat CEO's and Execs who have been growing even Fatter with Record Bonuses out of the Pockets of the American Public have just received a massive Smack-Down.

In Addition the Obama Administration has directed that the remaining $316 Billion in TARP funds head straight to Main-Street where the jobs are needed instead of Wall Street.

Several different Terrorist plots have been foiled - No Torture Was Required.

Lastly, we may soon have a vote on Medicare Part-E - Medicare for Everyone.

Not A Bad First Year so far.

I'm not saying everything is "perfect" - far from it - but just consider how different today is from yesterday, and the week before and the week before that?

All Five Health Care Bills have passed out of Committee and are headed to the House and Senate Floor for a vote. In the meantime the Dems seem to have finally learning the Branding Game and are now beginning to call the Public Option - Medicare Part E.

With this kind of framing calling it a "Government Take-over" or "Death Panel" just became all the more difficult. And it gets even harder with this recent study that shows that a Robust Public Option would almost immediately bring down Health Care Costs by an average of 11%.

Via FDL

What this means is that the premiums charged by the public option would be roughly 11 percent lower than private insurance, but, in reality, it would cost 18 percent less for the public option to provide health insurance. Since the public option is cheaper it would end up attracting a less healthy costumer base. Having people with more medical needs sign up for the public option would end up somewhat increasing the premiums the public option would need to charge. Conversely, because the public option would end up attracting many of the least healthy individuals, it would also drive down premiums for private insurance plans.

Yeah, that's some Change I can believe in.

Meanwhile the Obama White House has decided to openly admit the Fox News - GASP - IS Not News, this has prompted the Fixed Ones to defend themselves and for people such as Karl Rove to suggested in mock apoplexy that "People would have gone CRAZY if Bush had frozen out NBC or the New York times" -- yeah, well Bush Did Freeze out NBC and the New York Times!

ROVE: I mean, imagine what would have happened if President Bush had said, “You know what, I’m not going to — I’m going to call NBC not a news organization because, well, MSNBC has some ugly left- wing opinion programming”? I mean, people would go nuts.

What would happen if somebody said, “You know what, the people who are working for The New York Times are not journalists because on the opinion page of The New York Times there are very liberal journalists and very liberal editorials?” I mean, people would be up in arms.

No Karl, they wouldn't be - because they weren't when Dana Perino accused NBC of being biased in their Reporting in May 2008.

Perino: The reason that we sent the letter yesterday is because we had gotten fed up with the way that the President’s policies are being mischaracterized, or the situations on the ground weren’t being accurately reflected in the reporting. We had complained before. And it just reached a boiling point when things had boiled over when we believed that NBC News specifically edited out — intentionally edited out — something that the President said in response to a question in an interview regarding Iran, and that it mischaracterized the whole interview because of it.

As regards the civil war, I remember very distinctly how there was quite the pomp and circumstance when NBC, on the Today Show, decided to declare — that they were declaring that Iraq was a civil war. But since then, after the surge and things certainly improved in Iraq, NBC has never had a corresponding ceremony to say that Iraq is not in a civil war. I was just curious to find out what they believe.

And the same goes with the economy. When we got the numbers just two weeks ago on the GDP for the economic growth, it said that we had grown at 0.6 percent. And yet the anchor that night decided to disavow that number. We’re just curious what part of the official government data that’s been coming out for years do they not agree with. So we haven’t had a response on that.

Then there's the idea that the Obama White House is compiling a Nixon-like "Enemies" list simply by pointing out that Fox News is biased - yet that exact same accusation was made the Bush White House when Ed Gillespie accused NBC of being Biased...

Mr. Capus, I'm sure you don't want people to conclude that there is really no distinction between the "news" as reported on NBC and the "opinion" as reported on MSNBC, despite the increasing blurring of those lines. I welcome your response to this letter, and hope it is one that reassures your broadcast network's viewers that blatantly partisan talk show hosts like Christopher Matthews and Keith Olbermann at MSNBC don't hold editorial sway over the NBC network news division.

Never - NOT ONCE - did George W. Bush give an interview to the New York Times. It was even quite common for Conservatives to openly accuse NYT Editor Bill Keller of Treason simply because the Times had the Temerity to report that the Bush Administration was Illegally Wiretapping American Citizens.

Eleven days after the meeting with Bush, the Times defied the president; the story, by James Risen and Eric Lichtblau, was headlined bush lets u.s. spy on callers without courts. That same day, the USA Patriot Act was blocked in the Senate.

The White House went into attack mode. Its target: Bill Keller and the New York Times.

Even Former Nixon Aide Pat Buchanan thinks this "Enemies List" stuff simply Ridiculous!

BUCHANAN: It is the most idiotic comparison I’ve ever seen. Barack Obama won 95 percent of Washington DC, he comes in with both houses Congress behind him, the media love him, the country loves him. Nixon came in with both houses of Congress against him, he probably got 8 percent of the vote in Washington DC, the media loathed him. ... I don’t see any comparison between Obama and Nixon whatsoever. ... [T]here’s no comparison. Barack Obama’s got enormous press support, he’s got problems with Fox News but for heaven’s sakes there is no comparison here.

Yeah, well - when Barack Obama orders that the IRA Audit Rupert Murdoch and he has Rahm Emmanuel stage a break-in at Rockefeller Center to "dig up dirt" on Bill O'Reilly - (as if there already weren't enough dirt in his sexual harrassment case papers) - the Fox Whiners might have a point, right now they don't.

Nixon didn't just keep "A List" - he went for Pay Back!

Meanwhile as Liz Cheney is ranting about how Obama needs to "Keep America Safe" by continuing to implement TORTURE - and accuses MSNBC of being "afraid to debate the issues" while she refuses to appear on any of their shows and debate the issues - Obama is busy actually Keeping America Safe

Plot #1
Four men are in custody over an alleged plot to bomb a New York synagogue and Jewish community center.

The men wanted to fire surface-to-air missiles at military planes, according to prosecutors.

Plot #2
After weekend arrests made in Colorado and Queens, the FBI says it prevented a terrorist attack in New York City. Authorities arrested the plot's suspected ringleader, Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year-old airport shuttle driver, in Denver on Saturday night. Zazi's father, Mohammad Zazi, was also taken into custody, and both are expected to appear in court in Denver on Monday. Zazi had been under surveillance by the FBI and CIA for a year leading up to his arrest, and allegedly traveled to Pakistan twice for al Qaeda explosives training. Nine handwritten pages detailing the manufacture and detonation of explosives were found in Zazi's possession, according to the FBI.

Plot #3

BOSTON - A pharmacy college graduate and two friends tried and failed to get into terrorist training camps and then plotted to kill two prominent U.S. politicians and randomly shoot people at American shopping malls, authorities said Wednesday.

Tarek Mehanna, who recently taught math at a Muslim school in Worcester, was arrested early Wednesday at his parents' suburban Boston home. Mehanna was charged with conspiring with two other men — an American now in Syria and another man who is cooperating with authorities — to provide support to terrorists.

Rather than use Waterboarding, Stress Positions and Sleep Deprivation President Obama actually bothers to read his daily security briefings which is a BIG change from where we were at the same point in President Bush's first term.

Again, everything isn't perfect - Chicago still didn't get the Olympics, we don't yet have a comprehensive plan to deal with Afghanistan and Pakistan - but with actual effective diplomacy instead of cowboy bluster, rational policy and bipartisan outreach instead of petty partisan snipe-hunts and vindictiveness our country is certainly headed in a better direction, the right direction, and that's the change I wanted and voted for.

Obama White House is Dead Right to Go After Fox

All week long we've been hearing from the Punditocracy questioning the White Houses "Motives" for attacking Fox News.

"What do they hope to gain?"

"Why do they feel the need to "Punch Down"?"

"Don't they realize Fox has unlimited Time to Fight Back?"

"Don't they know it's going to Back Fire?"

Well here's the thing - It's Not! What they've done is shine big bright spotlight on Fox, and now the Cockroaches are starting to scramble for cover.

It's doesn't matter that their is NO REAL DIFFERENCE between Fox's Opinion Commentators and the So-Called "News" reporters as Media Matters has thoroughly documented.

The question we should be considering is how many decades did the Right Wing Decry "Media Bias"? How long did they make it the Mantra? When did it ever "Back-fire" on them?

We've even had studies of so-called Media Bias from UCLA that conclude that the Media has an inherent Left-Wing Bias.

While the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal is conservative, the newspaper's news pages are liberal, even more liberal than The New York Times. The Drudge Report may have a right-wing reputation, but it leans left. Coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media. Meanwhile, almost all major media outlets tilt to the left.

These are just a few of the surprising findings from a UCLA-led study, which is believed to be the first successful attempt at objectively quantifying bias in a range of media outlets and ranking them accordingly.

"I suspected that many media outlets would tilt to the left because surveys have shown that reporters tend to vote more Democrat than Republican," said Tim Groseclose, a UCLA political scientist and the study's lead author. "But I was surprised at just how pronounced the distinctions are."

"Overall, the major media outlets are quite moderate compared to members of Congress, but even so, there is a quantifiable and significant bias in that nearly all of them lean to the left," said co‑author Jeffrey Milyo, University of Missouri economist and public policy scholar.

Of course any report that says the Drudge Report Leans Left has to be seriously questioned, but the point isn't whether such charges are true - it's that they've become so common they are often assumed to be true and therefore those with a right-ward persuasion are justified in feeling aggrieved and disenfranchised.

Then comes Fox News.

They claim to be "Fair" in that they won't dismiss Right-Wing Ideas so hair-brained that the Mainstream Media wouldn't touch it while wearing a Level 5 Hazmat suit. They claim to be "Balanced" in that they hire multiple sets of Conservative Republicans like Former Congressman John Kascich (who led the Gingrich Budget Fight Against Bill Clinton in the 90's) and Former Governor Mike Huckabee to Host their own shows, but have yet to do the same for a single solitary Former Democratic Politician?

"Fair"? I think not.

They even gave convicted congressional liar Oliver North his own show!

Shouldn't we be expecting the William Jefferson/Blaggo Variety Hour from them next?

MSNBC is supposedly "Biased" to the left but the largest block of programming they have everyday is hosted by Former Gingrich-Era Republican Congressman Joe (Oops, I just found a dead intern in my office) Scarborough. And each and everyday - sometimes multiple times a day - we get pithy commentary on MSNBC by former Nixon henchman and devout Right-wing Nutball/Neo-Racist Pat Buchannan! If anything MSNBC is pretty darn "Balanced" when *those two* are what you have to cantilever against for contrast.

The point is that no media outlet is perfectly balanced - and it's easy to admit that if you look at the things with as skewed a world-view as Sarah (Death Panel) Palin, Michelle (Anti-American Test) Bachmann, James (Global Warming is a Hoax) Inhofe or John (JUST NUKE 'EM) Bolton of course you think CNN or the New York Times is "Biased" when they refuse to agree with and validate some of your Fracking Crazy, Wacked-Out Ideas - however some of them on their actual News pages, if not their opinion sections, are at least Trying to do their reporting accurately and responsibly. Conversely Fox News not only isn't trying to be balanced on their News Coverage, their deliberately spinning it like a top as was shown when direct orders from Fox VP John Moody were given to his NEWS people to try and look for the "Happy Insurgents"....

The point is that bashing the so-called "Liberal Media" really didn't hurt the Conservatives - they RAN WITH IT like a runaway horse whose tail was on fire. So pointing out the FOX NEWS IS BIASED doesn't really have a downside, what are they going to do Make up even Bigger Lies about Obama?

Besides delegitimizing Fox as a reliable source for News and Facts - this tactic has the additional benefit of actually being true, and ultimately Truth is an Absolute Defense.

Michael Moore Debunks Dr. Sanjay Gupta

In less then 24 hours since his blistering appearance on CNN where he repeated asked Wolf Blitzer to apologize for their failure to present the facts to the American people prior to our entering the Iraq War - Michael Moore has now fulfilled his promise and completely fact checked the erroneous report presented by Dr. Sanjay Gupta just prior to his interview.

It's been quite a while since anyone has had the cojones to take on the Wolf in such a way and even Moore points this out as he notes how long it took Blitz to confront Dick Cheney (although admittedly all he really did was confront Lynn Cheney - and lost - then whined about it)

This time though, the one who really set Michael off wasn't Blizter it was Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

First there's the trick of pointing to something that's right there in plain sight already.

DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN: "(Moore says) the United States slipped to number 37 in the world's health care systems. It's true. ... Moore brings a group of patients, including 9/11 workers, to Cuba and marvels at their free treatment and quality of care. But hold on - that WHO list puts Cuba's health care system even lower than the United States, coming in at #39."

THE TRUTH:

* "But hold on?" 'SiCKO' clearly shows the WHO list, with the United States at number #37, and Cuba at #39. Right up on the screen in big five-foot letters. It's even in the trailer! CNN should have its reporter see his eye doctor. The movie isn't hiding from this fact. Just the opposite.
* The fact that the healthcare system in an impoverished nation crippled by our decades-old blockade (including medical supplies and drugs) ranks so closely to ours is more an indictment of the American system than the Cuban system.

http://www.cms.hhs.gov/...

There's the tried and true - half truth.

CNN: Americans have shorter wait times than everyone but Germans when seeking non-emergency elective procedures, like hip replacement, cataract surgery, or knee repair.

THE TRUTH:

* This isn't the whole truth. CNN pulled out a statistic about elective procedures. Of the six countries surveyed in that study (United States, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Germany, Australia) only Canada had longer waiting times than America for sick adults waiting to schedule a doctor's appointment for a medical problem. 81% of patients in New Zealand got a same or next-day appointment for a non-routine visit, 71% in Britain, 69% in Germany, 66% in Australia, 47% in the U.S., and 36% in Canada. (The Doc's in, but It'll be AWhile. Catherine Arnst, Business Week. June 22, 2007 http://www.businessweek.com/... )
* One way America is able to achieve decent waiting times is that it leaves 47 million people out of the health care system entirely, unlike any other Western country. When you remove 47 million people from the line, your wait should be shorter. So why is the U.S. second to last in wait times?

Then of course, there's outright lying.

CNN: In fact, Americans live just a little bit longer than Cubans on average.

THE TRUTH:

* Just the opposite. The 2006 United Nations Human Development Report's human development index states the life expectancy in the United States is 77.5 years. It is 77.6 years in Cuba. (Human Development Report 2006, United Nations Development Programme, 2006 at 283. http://hdr.undp.org/... )

CNN: "But no matter how much Moore fudged the facts, and he did fudge some facts..."

* This is libel. There is not a single fact that is "fudged" in the film. No one has proven a single fact in the film wrong. We expect CNN to correct their mistakes on the air and to apologize to their viewers.

Anyone else get the feeling that there's an unseen "Or Else" at the end of that last sentence?

I'm thinking there is.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a site that did this type of fact checking against the MSM on a regular basis. A site that included audio and video clips as well as completely transcripts of what was said, then also included links and facts to show just how full of B.S. they are so often?

Oh wait...

There already is - http://www.mediamatters.org

CBS Hypocrisy in Firing Gen John Batiste

As Thinkprogress has noted, the firing of Gen John Batiste for speaking out on the Iraq War has been a complete disgrace. Their given rationale is that his advocacy against Bush's Iraq Strategy has undermined the viewers ability to see his analysis as "unbiased and objective" according to Linda Mason, CBS News Vice President, Standards and Special Projects:

"When we hire someone as a consultant, we want them to share their expertise with our viewers," she said. "By putting himself front and center in an anti-Bush ad, the viewer might have the feeling everything he says is anti-Bush. And that doesn’t seem like an analytical approach to the issues we want to discuss."

I'm sorry but such an opinion on the viewers part would be highly prejudicial would it not? Rather than take steps to prove such bigotry wrong, by pointing out that Batiste is a lifelong Republican, CBS has instead chosen to give in and confirm that view with their decision.

Nice.

It's also interesting to note that CBS News continues to maintain several pro-Bush War advocates on it's staff, but has yet to question their objectivity.

Watch the Video Ad

The sheer level of hypocritical B.S. coming from CBS on this issue has been staggering. While they've fired Batiste, CBS continues to keep former White House communications director and consultant to the McCain campaign, Nicholle Wallace on the payroll. Here are a few examples of Wallace's "Objectiveness":

"The Democrats have to walk a fine line and be careful. People don’t want to turn on the TV and see every story being about the obstruction of people trying to do things." [Washington Post, 3/7/07]

"Well, you know, people ask me all the time, ‘Do they [in the White House] get it? Do they get how bad things are?’ And the answer is yes." [CBS Evening News, 12/12/06]

At the end of the day, no matter how discontent some voters are, they really don’t want to see Democrats in control of the Congress. [CBS Evening News, 10/23/06]

And here are some of Wallace's statements on McCain:

I think, one, there is John McCain and there is everybody else. Nobody else running for president or thinking about running for president is even in a category of suggesting or proposing policy that any commander in chief is considering adapting. And I think John McCain himself addressed the political perils this week when he came out in all his interviews and said, `You know, everyone knows I have presidential aspirations, but let’s put all that aside and do right by the men and women of our military.’ And I think that is the essence of who he his and what his campaign will be about. [CBS Saturday, 1/6/07]

Yeah well, You outta know Nicolle.

But Wallace isn't alone in her blatant partisanship, there's also CBS Military analysis Michael O'Hanlon who has openly advocated his support for Bush's Surge Strategy in Iraq. From the Washington Post via TPM.

President Bush's plan for a surge of American troops in Iraq has run into a brick wall of congressional opposition. Critics rightly argue that it may well be too little, way too late. But for a skeptical Congress and nation, it is still the right thing to try -- as long as we do not count on it succeeding and we start working on backup plans even as we grant Bush his request...

Rather than deny funding for Bush's initiatives, Congress should provide it now -- but only for fiscal 2007 (meaning through September). By that point, or even the August congressional recess, we should know if the surge is showing promise. If it does, Congress could consider continuing its support....

If the surge fails, we will need a whole new paradigm for Iraq policy, and it is hardly too soon for Congress to start fleshing out our choices. But for now, Congress should also give the president the money and support that he requests.

It should be noted that O'Hanlon has been a consultant with the Brooking's Institute, one of the oldest "Liberal" think tanks in existence, which has long sought to counterbalance the conservative Heritage Foundation and Liberterian Cato Institute - at least in theory. In fact, what he's saying here is "Lets Give War A Chance".

Um, how about let's Not - M,kay?

I may be wrong here, but it seems to me that Batiste has just been Goodling-ed:

Two years ago, Robin C. Ashton, a seasoned criminal prosecutor at the Department of Justice, learned from her boss that a promised promotion was no longer hers.

"You have a Monica problem," Ms. Ashton was told, according to several Justice Department officials. Referring to Monica M. Goodling, a 31-year-old, relatively inexperienced lawyer who had only recently arrived in the office, the boss added, "She believes you’re a Democrat and doesn’t feel you can be trusted." [...]

Ms. Goodling would soon be quizzing applicants for civil service jobs at Justice Department headquarters with questions that several United States attorneys said were inappropriate, like who was their favorite president and Supreme Court justice. One department official said an applicant was even asked, "Have you ever cheated on your wife?"

Ms. Goodling also moved to block the hiring of prosecutors with résumés that suggested they might be Democrats, even though they were seeking posts that were supposed to be nonpartisan, two department officials said.

Is CBS applying an anti-Democrat Litmus test? It's a good question after Dan Rather and superscript-gate led to Katie Couric on the CBS News, and on 60 Minutes with her despicable grilling of John Edwards on what "some people say..." about his wife's cancer, even though she herself had continued working while her own husband battled colon cancer, isn't it?

One clue might be the fact that CBS took two weeks to fire Don Imus for his racial and gender slurs, but just two days to fire Batiste for speaking up on Iraq.

Hmmm...

Or how about this further comment from Ms. Mason:

"It isn’t just that he took an advocacy position," she said. "General Batiste took part in a commercial that’s being shown on television to raise money for veterans against the war."

Well, no - he didn't. The VoteVets ad that General Batiste - who commanded the Army's First Infantry Division in Iraq during 2004 and 2005 - participated in was not a fundraising ad and made no request for funds. Batiste simply spoke out and shared the benefit of his experience after two years on the front lines fighting Bush's pointless War, and simply targeted those in Congress who continued to enable it.

Like Kyle Sampson, how many different stories on why Batiste was really fired is Mason going to make up?

I'm not suggesting that either Wallace or O'Hanlon also be fired for their advocacy, only that full disclosure of ones opinion not be considered anathema to objective and open debate. Nor do I think Gen Batiste should go back to CBS, there are of course other Networks and outlets (Countdown - hint hint!) where he can speak openly and honestly. It was their mistake, their loss and they shouldn't get a Mulligan. If anything, their action has actually had the reverse of the desired effect of silencing war critics by helping to highlight this issue and keep it running through several more news cycles. They may have just made Batiste into a Martyr.

From Atrios.

[L]ots of former generals and similar are on the cable networks cheering on the war, so anyone who criticizes former generals speaking up is essentially saying they can only express their opinions in one direction. In addition, while this point wasn’t (IIRC) made explicitly, it essentially makes the whole "former general as cable news commentator" position a farcical one at odds with any claimed journalistic pretension, as they’re only on if they support current policy.

It's exactly the kind of one-sided objectivity we've long come to know and expect from the "Liberal Media" isn't it?

I simply want to say that after the service performed by Gen. Batiste to his country, he (and us) clearly deserve far better than treatment he received from CBS News.

Whether you agree or not, you can tell CBS how you feel by going here.
